I’m happy to see you here. As a photographer, I see beautiful natural hairstyles around me every single day.
It makes it very hard to pass up taking a picture or quick video interview to forever remember their uniqueness.
We all have our own experiences when it comes to our hair. Some of us have very similar experiences. For me, I grew up learning how to take care of my hair at an early age.
By the 5th grade, I was combing my hair myself and my Mom was applauding me for my independence and creativity. At around 9 years old, my sister and I got our first perm and like a lot of other little girls, it damaged our hair more than anything.
I never got a perm again.
My Godmother and Godsister were hair salon owners of Marge and Gina’s Live Hair Salon. I was taken to the shop every two weeks for pretty much my entire life, up until moving away for college.
Those years of knowing what it takes to take care of my hair were years that helped nurture my love of hair growth and natural hairstyles. Hair is a beautiful gift from God. One that we should take care of (while we still have it growing on our head) lol!
Before I moved to New Orleans to study chemistry pre-med at Xavier University, my Godmother and Godsister gave me two valuable gifts:
1. They taught me how to press my hair with the one and only pressing comb (better than any flat iron) 🙂
2. They taught me how to cornrow my hair (this is such an easy and protective styling option that helped supercharge the growth of my hair).
